There are days when our minds scream louder than everything around us. Thoughts come rushing in—worry, doubt, fear, and even things we thought we had already moved past. If we’re honest, sometimes we let those thoughts sit too long. We replay them, rehearse them, and before we know it, our peace is gone. That’s when we have to remind ourselves that not every thought deserves a place in our minds.

The truth is, we may not always control what thoughts come to us, but we do have control over what we allow to stay.

The Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 10:5 (KJV), “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” That means we have a responsibility. We cannot just let anything live in our minds—we have to check it and line it up with what God says.

But we also have to be honest about something else—what we watch and what we listen to matters. What we allow entrance through our eyes and ears will eventually make its way into our minds. The conversations we entertain, the music we play, the shows we watch, and even what we scroll through daily affect what we think and how we feel. Proverbs 4:23 (KJV) tells us, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” If we are constantly feeding ourselves things that bring confusion, negativity, or temptation, we cannot expect peace to guard our heart.

We have to recognize how powerful our thoughts really are. One negative thought can change our whole mood. One lie can make us question who we are. But one word from God can bring us right back to peace. That’s why Philippians 4:8 (KJV) reminds us, “Whatsoever things are true… honest… just… pure… lovely… of good report… think on these things.” God is showing us what deserves our attention—and that includes what we choose to take in daily.

We must learn to be intentional. When fear tries to come in, we remind ourselves of truth. When doubt shows up, we speak what God has said about us. Isaiah 26:3 (KJV) says, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” That kind of peace does not just happen—we have to keep our minds stayed on Him, and that means being mindful of what we allow in our headspace.

This does not mean negative thoughts won't come. They will. But we do not have to give them permission to stay. We have the authority to say, “This thought is not from God, so it cannot take root in me.” We cannot allow our minds to become a place where fear and confusion live, especially when we have the power to guard what we take in. Protecting our minds is part of protecting our relationship with God. Because when our thoughts are aligned with Him, our hearts stay steady, even when life is not. And on the days when our minds try to drift, we remind ourselves that we are not prisoners to our thoughts. Through God, we have the power to take control.

Romans 12:2 (KJV) reminds us, “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” That means change starts in our thoughts, and also in what we feed our minds. So we choose carefully. We choose peace. We choose truth. We choose God.

Yes, our mind is a battlefield, but we are learning that we can win the battles! And with God’s help, every thought that tries to rise against us we have the power to take captive and cause it to bow.
